Weather:
We are having an Indian Summer the temperatures have been above average most of September.  We have had a couple days of rain but otherwise the weather has been great.
Plans:
We are going to spread some grass seed today.  Also, I need to start to clean the vegetable garden.  The string beans, zucchini, and basil are finished.  I need to trim the strawberries back.
Activities:
The spinach is doing well and needs to be picked, the snap peas are coming along and I think that I will get a small harvest of them in the next few days.
I have cleared the middle section of the driveway as you approach the house (see picture).  Today my outside jobs are grass seed, gather more shingles (from the barn roof) for Richard to make kindling and start to clean up the vegetable garden.
Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:
The yard and garden are looking pretty good.  Richard has done a lot of work in back clearing dead wood and cutting down some of the trees to clear the area.  This last week Richard has been working on the chokecherry trees along the driveway.

Weather:

High 80’s cooling off nicely in the evening.  I think that this has been the coolest July we have had since we have moved here.

Plantings:

I am taking a chance here and planting a fall crop of:

  • Spinach
  • Snap Peas
  • Beets

I hope the that weather will hold through September so that I will be able harvest this late crop. Next year I will be able to gage better when to plant the second season.

Activities:

Picked strawberries sliced them and will eat them for lunch during the week.  Picked zucchini and butternut squash; sliced and froze them using my foodsaver.   Cut back the herbs, they were getting pretty big.  I pulled the beets today, cleaned and boiled them I will freeze these as Richard likes beets, I don’t.

Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:

The tomatoes are coming along very well.  I would think in the next week or so I will have cherry tomatoes.  The beefstakes will take a little longer.

The zucchini and butternut squash are producing very well I think that I will have to start giving it away soon cause I can’t keep up with it.

Garlic!

I harvested my garlic this weekend.  It now has to dry for 3 weeks, then it will be ready to use.  Pretty Cool!
