Genre: Mystery

The genre of mystery novels is a young form of literature that has developed since the early-19th century. The rise of literacy began in the years of the English Renaissance and, as people began to read over time, they became more individualistic in their thinking. As people became more individualistic in their thinking, they developed a respect for human reason and the ability to solve problems.

Perhaps a reason that mystery fiction was unheard of before the 1800s was due in part to the lack of true police forces. Before the Industrial Revolution, many of the towns would have constables and a night watchman at best. Naturally, the constable would be aware of every individual in the town, and crimes were either solved quickly or left unsolved entirely. As people began to crowd into cities, police forces became institutionalized, and the need for detectives was realized – thus the mystery novel arose.

Night Blind is the second book in the Dark Iceland series. Five years ago, Ari Thor Aragon, a young policeman moved to a small town on the outer fringes of Northern Iceland, Siglufjordur. Ari is still developing a tolerable relationship with the villagers of the small town.

When the new police chief is shot and killed, Ari Thor sets out to figure out who murdered the chief. To assist in the investigation the former chief of police, Tomas, returns to Siglufjordur, together Ari Thor and Tomas begin to unravel the mystery of who murdered Hefjolfur.

Ari Thor and his girlfriend, Kristin, have a ten-month-old son and are having difficulties in their relationship stemming from some unresolved issues in Ari Thor’s past additionally Ari Thor is resentful that he was not made police chief when Tomas moved south and is now coping with Tomas taking over the investigation.

Things are not as they seem and despite the outside distractions that life has placed in front of Ari Thor he is able to puzzle out the mystery.

I enjoyed the book, if you are interested in Nordic Noir this is a fine book for you.

Peter Ash in this third book of the series once again seems to have gotten himself mixed up with some bad hombres while trying to help a friend. The story was clever and original but there was just a little too much violence for my taste. This is an action packed story with Peter fighting for his and his friends lives every moment. While I enjoyed the second book, this book left me cold. The story was good and well plotted and will have an appeal to many readers.

For a début novel The Chalk Man was very good. The book was a mixture of Kate Atkinson and Mo Hayder, two very skilful storytellers to my mind. I like books that move from past to present, the author did a good job of moving gracefully between the periods.

You get the sense that not everything is as it seems. Not really sure whats what, Eddie, who is recounting the story tends to neglect telling you all, leaving a bit for later. So do not get comfortable while reading cause you never know what is right around the corner.
